After qualifying, Andy Slade FCA, worked in industry for 8 years, becoming a Group Financial Controller, before relocating to Manchester and working on his own as a contractor. Whilst contracting had its benefits, Andy knew his Limited company contractor business was only ever successful if he was in work himself. He wanted to build something more permanent, and also something to be proud of. Andy joined TaxAssist Accountants in March 2019, and operates his franchise from a shop in Stockport.
What initially attracted you to becoming a TaxAssist franchisee?
The opportunity to work for myself and with a respected brand, with real backing and a good culture were the main draws. I wanted to get back to having and managing my own team and be more involved in my local community, so I started looking into running my own practice. I knew I would need some help in the early days, not only with some of the technical aspects, but also with the way the industry is moving I wanted to ensure I was working with the right technologies and partners.
On the TaxAssist Discovery Day my wife and I were both really impressed, not only with the depth of the support TaxAssist provides, but also and importantly, the culture, a friendly positive can-do team who care about their franchisees.
How has being a part of the franchise helped you to grow your practice?
Strong branding and marketing channels have enabled a constant flow of leads and vetting of new technologies gives me time to focus on other things, and allows a mobile/portable work set-up.
What do you think differentiates TaxAssist from the competition?
Real support from real people who are responsive to individual needs, yet can share the collective experience and knowledge of a 20+ year, 200+ office network.
What has the training and support from TaxAssist Accountants been like?
Fantastic! In depth initial training followed up by optional training as and when I need/want it. The support that was presented on the Discovery Day now only feels like the tip of the iceberg. The support team are great, and it’s invaluable to know you can reach out when needed and will get a prompt and accurate response, whether that’s a technical, IT or business development question.
The TaxAssist support comes not just from the support teams in Norwich, but from the shared experience and knowledge of my neighbouring/other franchisees. TaxAssist is a real business family, wanting and helping all to succeed.
Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?
Most definitely. I cannot imagine working for someone else anymore! I wish I had done it sooner! I go to work each day knowing I can choose what I do and that I am building a business and adding value to my net worth.
What are your plans for the future?
I’d like to recruit, grow and build a team, open another office then have a holiday!
What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give someone looking to buy a TaxAssist Accountants franchise?
Don’t hesitate and trust the process!
